Fluoride Products
Depending on the area in which you live, you may need to add additional fluoride to your oral hygiene routine. Fluoride helps prevent dental decay and strengthen tooth enamel. There are a number of products available commercially to assist in the delivery of effective fluoride oral treatments. However, fluoride applications are typically prescribed or recommended by a dental professional or primarily heath care provider. Consult a professional before applying fluoride treatments.
Generally speaking, fluoride treatments are encouraged for children and people with natural teeth and have a history of dental decay, high number of fillings or dry mouth.
- Daily Fluoride Rinses ā these are sold over the counter and are generally safe to use as directed.
- Fluoride Gels ā these are also available at a pharmacy or drug retail outlet to be used as directed.
- Fluoride Varnish āthis is more highly concentrated form of fluoride generally applied by health care professionals. Itās painted onto the teeth with a special brush and can take less than 2 minutes to apply. The varnish adheres to the teeth. Fluoride is then released slowly over time to help re-mineralize the surface of the teeth. Its effectives can last for several weeks. Consult a dentist before use or application.
